Parents and guardians have a critical role to play in preparing their wards for their BECE and WASSCE examinations through the support they provide.
Parents provide support that extends beyond mere payment of fees and other financial obligations. In this post, the Children’s Ministry portal takes a careful look at how parents must support their WAEC’s BECE and WASSCE preparations.
How parents must support children’s BECE/WASSCE preparation
#1. Parental motivation:
Parents and guardians need to constantly lift the emotions of their children, who are preparing for their final examination. Children need motivation and inspiration during this time in their lives. You must let the children know that they have all it takes to excel in their examinations. Constantly make positive statements about the learner, and ensure that you make them believe first in God and second in their God-given abilities to excel in their examination.
#2. Be curious about their challenges.
As BECE/WASSCE preparations progress, children or candidates face so many problems in their studies as well as in their daily lives. As a parent, you must be interested in what your young learners are going through and provide them with the needed support. Do your best to know what is not going well and what is going well.
Set aside some time during the weekend to discuss with the learners issues that concern them. Some students face challenges in their subjects, while others simply lack the courage and motivation to learn. Some people are depressed and emotionally down. Talking with them and allowing them to share their challenges will be helpful. It also helps you, as a parent, begin to find solutions for these children.
#3. Pray for them.
Prayer is a crucial spiritual exercise that all parents must engage in on behalf of their BECE or WASSCE candidates preparing for their examination. The WASSCE and BECE exams are special battles for our learners, and they need our spiritual support. Also, encourage and engage your wards in prayer to help them.
#4. Give them the necessary educational materials.
While students prepare for the BECE/WASSCE, parents also need to support their candidates with materials such as mocks and past questions with answers, among others. For candidates who need help in other subjects, parents with the means can get extra tuition from educators to help the candidates polish up and be ready for their examination.
#5. Challenge and reward your candidates.
As children prepare for the final examination, they sometimes need extra motivation in the form of rewards to help them do well. Parents can challenge their wards, promising their candidates some goodies if they obtain a certain grade in their mock examination. Once a parent enters into this agreement, it is their responsibility to ensure that the students receive the reward. During the mock, parents can set aside better rewards for their final BECE or WASSCE examination. Such an approach can also challenge candidates to study extra hard. In the end, with God on your side, the learner is more likely to do well because he or she is challenged to work hard to receive the reward you have promised.
#6. Teach your children
Yes, as parents, we also have what it takes to contribute to the education of our children. This we can do through teaching. Most parents have what it takes to teach their children one or two subjects, yet, they are reluctant to do that. Parents should have access to the textbooks their children learn. Go through one or two topics and help the child. Better still, engage the learner in a questions-and-answer session using the textbook. This session will be fun and push the learner to revise well since he or she knows Daddy and Mummy will be asking questions.
As your 2024 BECE and WASSCE candidates prepare for their pending examinations, the Children Ministry is challenging parents to play their critical roles effectively and efficiently in helping their wards succeed in their academics.
Always pray for your wards and their colleagues in the same school and church. Help them with your sincere words of encouragement, and let them know that they can pass their examination with hard work and dedication to their books and studies.
As you pray for your wards, do well to pray for their teachers and schools as well, so that the examinations start and end successfully.
