The school lists shared here will help BECE candidates and parents have a fair idea of the categories in which their likely choices will be when the new files are released by the Ghana Education Service.
The free SHS school lists for 2024 BECE graduates shared here can be downloaded by the candidates. Each year, the school selection file containing the schools, programs, accommodation, and location is updated. The update may lead to the movement of a school from, say, Category A to B or from C to B, among others. This means that a school on the category C list in 2023 may move to category B if its infrastructure improves, and vice versa.
Free SHS School Lists and Categories for 2024 BECE Graduates
All the school lists have been categorized into four. These are:
Category A schools:
They are the top schools in Ghana. They have all the needed infrastructure, such as school buildings, laboratories, and excellent dormitories, to accommodate a lot of students. Most of the schools in this category are also oversubscribed when it comes to school selection. This means that more students choose these schools, leading to great academic competition just to get placed in them. These schools are safer to choose if a candidate often obtains grades with raw scores of not less than 400, although in some cases, a raw score between 350 and 400 can help get placed. It will also depend on the program of choice and the accommodation option chosen.
Category B schools:
These are very excellent schools which match category A schools in terms of academic performance at the WASSCE and sometimes perform better than category A schools in general. The only disadvantage of getting enrolled in such a school is that, these schools cannot boast of all the needed infrastructure like Category B schools. However, these are excellent schools and would be great places to learn for any student. Interestingly, these are also dream schools for many students. Students who want to avoid the Category A choice and the related competition should choose Category B schools as their first and second choices.
Category C schools:
Category B schools are schools that have little to boast of in terms of infrastructure. Often, they are kind of neglected and less prioritized by the government. But they have some of the best teachers, just like the Category A and B schools. Often, students choose these schools without expecting to be placed in them, only to miss them and be pushed into the self placement option. There are equally good schools here and making the right choices will help you.

Category D schools:
These are Day schools in Ghana selected from the other categories. There are compulsory schools which all candidates must choose from. Students are to choose one school from this list. The school chosen must be closer to the residence of the candidate so that he or she can commute from home to school each day, just incase he or she is placed in such a school.
