A hero is often defined as someone who exhibits courage and bravery, but the Bible offers a unique perspective on heroism. In the story of Joshua, we see a hero who serves God with his whole heart, demonstrating bravery and courage in a way that may not be immediately apparent.

Joshua’s journey begins when God chooses him to succeed Moses, leading the Israelites into the Promised Land. God commissions Joshua in front of the entire assembly, giving him some of Moses’ authority to ensure the people’s obedience. After Moses’ death, God speaks directly to Joshua, reminding him of His promise to give the Israelites the land.

God’s command to Joshua is clear: “Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9). Joshua obeys, leading the people across the Jordan River and into the land God promised. He encourages the people as God encouraged him, urging them to be strong and brave.

The conquest of Jericho is a remarkable example of Joshua’s faith and courage. God instructs him to march around the city with the priests and the people, and when the walls collapse, they capture the town. This victory is a testament to Joshua’s trust in God and his willingness to obey His commands.

Throughout the story, Joshua stands firm in his belief in God, refusing to abandon Him even when faced with challenges and opposition. He declares to the people, “As for me and my family, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15). His strong faith inspires the people to commit to serving God as well.

Joshua’s heroism is not just about military victories or grand gestures; it’s about his unwavering dedication to serving God and following His commands. He shows us that true heroism is rooted in faith, obedience, and trust in God’s promises.
